TAMKO kicks off 75th anniversary celebration
TAMKO Building Products Inc. this week officially kicked off its 75th year in business at the 75th National Association of Home Builders International Builders' Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
During 2019, TAMKO will celebrate two important anniversary dates:
• March 9 is the day in 1944 that TAMKO founders E.L. and Mary Ethel Craig bought an old streetcar barn and shingle-making equipment in Joplin. The business would eventually become TAMKO Building Products.
• Sept. 5 is the day the Craigs officially named their new roofing company TAMKO, an acronym of the first letters of the states they believed would be their sales territory — Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.
TAMKO Chairman Ethelmae Humphreys, 92, is the daughter of the company’s founders and a TAMKO employee for more than 70 years.
“TAMKO is more than a business — it’s a family,” said TAMKO president and CEO David Humphreys, the third generation of the Craig-Humphreys leadership. “Over the years, my mother (Ethelmae) has compared the business to having a younger sibling — we care for it, we love it, we do whatever is necessary for it to thrive."
Herron Dental Center donates equipment
Herron Regional Dental Center, with offices in Pittsburg and Columbus, Kansas, recently donated a much-needed piece of dental equipment to Labette Community College’s dental assistant program.
The donated equipment, the iTero Intraoral Scanner, is designed to scan patients’ mouths, replacing the need for impressions. It is used for crowns, bridges and Invisalign images. The practice donated the equipment to help ensure the school’s dental assistant students are trained in the latest technology and have an advantage in the job market upon graduation.
“Labette Community College has a quality dental assistant program. Students that get to use technology like the iTero will be better trained for entering the workforce,” Dr. Robert Herron, of Herron Regional Dental Center in Pittsburg, said in a statement.
