The challenger in Tuesday’s election for the 1st District Kansas House of Representatives position said he will seek a recount of the vote.

Mike Houser, the Republican candidate, said Saturday that because of the closeness of the vote, he owes it to those who voted for him. Houser would have to pay for the recount.

After Friday’s canvass of Tuesday’s ballots by the Cherokee County Commission, the margin between Houser and incumbent Democrat Doug Gatewood narrowed to 77 votes. Houser had 2,828 votes after the official tally and Gatewood had 2,905 votes.
