GALENA, Kan. — Galena City Councilman Roy Watkins was remembered by friends and family Sunday as a caring man who worked hard for his community.
Watkins, 68, served as the mayor of Galena from 1989 to 1991 and served multiple terms on the Council. He also retired from the Galena Fire Department after 23 years of service.
He died following a battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Linda, three children and a grandchild.
"He was a very caring and loving person," said Linda Watkins in a phone interview. She was married to Watkins for 13 years. "He loved people, and there isn't anything he wouldn't have done for anybody."
Linda Watkins is also a member of the City Council. People thought being married would influence their votes, but Linda said that wasn't the case.
"He had his opinion; I had mine," she said. "We were both pretty strong-headed."
Mayor Dale Oglesby said Watkins was an advocate for the residents of Galena.
"And he was a great friend," Oglesby said, adding he enjoyed watching Watkins and Linda interact on the Council.
"I was almost taken by surprise at how great they worked together," he said. "He didn't always vote with her, and she didn't always vote with him. Both had their own opinions and stuck with them."
Oglesby said he will appoint someone to fill the vacancy, and the decision will be confirmed by the council.
Linda Watkins said her husband will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
