Globe photographers share their most memorable pictures of 2020

In a show of sympathy, Lamar's Jake Polodna (right) consoles St. Pius X quarterback Jack Mosh as the clock clicks down on their Class 2 state championship earlier this month at Blair Oaks High School in Wardsville. Globe | Laurie Sisk

"Searching for that perfect celebration photo as the clock wound down, my eyes were drawn instead to Polodna, who paused his team celebration to comfort the other guy after a hard-fought 6-3 state championship win," Sisk said. "Polodna's actions touched me deeply and made me realize we could all exercise empathy on a more regular basis. I've probably shot more impressive sports photos, but my favorite are those that take sports beyond the game and into the hearts and minds of the competitors."
