NEOSHO, Mo. — A Granby man pleaded guilty Monday to sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl and was sentenced to six years in prison.

Paul H. Scott, 40, changed his plea to guilty on a charge of first-degree statutory sodomy at a hearing in Newton County Circuit Court. Scott's plea agreement with the Newton County prosecutor's office called for a six-year sentence, and Associate Judge Kevin Selby assessed the defendant the agreed-upon length of term.

Court documents state that Scott sexually abused the girl in November 2016 in the Granby area.

The case came to light in November 2018 when the victim, now 15, was interviewed at the Children's Center in Joplin and disclosed that Scott had entered a bedroom where she was playing a video game and threw her off the bed. He then held her hands over her head and touched her inappropriately.

The girl told investigators that she bit Scott three times on his hand trying to resist him and that her bites drew blood.

Scott reportedly acknowledged the truth of her allegation during an interview with an investigator from the Newton County Sheriff's Department but claimed he was drunk at the time and "not in his right mind," according to a probable-cause affidavit.

Scott faced a penalty range of five years to life in prison on the charge.
