The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department is reporting the death of an inmate at the Jasper County Jail Thursday night as a possible suicide.

The Sheriff’s Department said Ronald G. Abdo Jr., 54, of Joplin, was discovered in his cell unconscious and not breathing. Emergency medical technicians called to the jail advised the Sheriff’s Department at 6:50 p.m. that Abdo had died.

The Sheriff’s Department said in a news release today that an investigation into the death is in progress. The news release did not state a cause of death.

Abdo was arrested by Joplin police Sunday night following a disturbance at his residence at 905 W. C St. He was accused of striking the 27-year-old son of his girlfriend twice on the head with a cane while the alleged victim was setting on a couch. He was charged with felony assault.
