A suspect in a burglary and vehicle theft a week ago at the Casa Grande Apartments in Joplin is being held at the Jasper County Jail in Carthage on bonds totaling $16,000.
Denver J. Buerge, 25, of Carthage, was arrested last week on a warrant charging him with failure to appear in court on a prior theft charge.
Since his arrest, Buerge was charged with burglary and tampering with a motor vehicle in connection with crimes reported July 9 at the Casa Grande Apartments at 2223 S. Texas Ave. and with the theft of a smartphone July 5 from a customer at Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant at 430 S. Geneva Ave.
Buerge became a suspect in the burglary and vehicle theft case when he tried to sell a handgun the same day to Brandon’s Gun Trading Co., 321 E. 20th St., and the shop’s operators became suspicious that the weapon and another gun already purchased from him might be stolen.
He reportedly fled the business when he realized police were being contacted. He left behind at the store the vehicle he allegedly drove up in, which proved to have been stolen from the apartment complex. Police found a window screen inside the vehicle that had been removed to gain entry to an apartment there.
