Police arrested a 27-year-old man following a shots-fired incident early Sunday morning in the bar district of downtown Joplin.

Officers responded to a 1:12 a.m. report of a disturbance involving a weapon in the 500 block of South Joplin Avenue and located a man who reported having been assaulted by three other people. One of the assailants purportedly retrieved a handgun from a white passenger car following the assault and fired the weapon into the air before fleeing the scene, according to Capt. Nick Jimenez of the Joplin Police Department.

Jimenez said in a news release Monday morning that the assailant's discharging of the firearm apparently prompted a second man to shoot his gun into the air several times. That man — identified as Dakota Spillman — was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon.

Jimenez said the matter remained under investigation Monday, and anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police at 417-623-3131.
