Two people were killed in a traffic accident just west of Galena, Kansas, early today, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred at approximately 11 a.m., KHP said, when a vehicle struck two people who were riding bicycles along Route 66. The two cyclists were killed, but investigators have not released their identities or any other details about them. KHP said this afternoon that investigators are still on scene.

The initial 911 call went to the Cherokee County sheriff, who called in the highway patrol, the sheriff's office said.
