I'm pleased that the incident involving Jasper County Presiding Commissioner Chuck Surface being arrested for DWI didn't result in the loss of life or property, as many DWIs do.

Jasper County Sheriff Archie Dunn and Surface have been at odds since Dunn won the election for sheriff.

Deputies were well aware of the commissioner's social behaviors. With county elections next to hand, the timing of Commissioner Surface's arrest is, to say the least, suspicious. Having said that, deputies were well within their rights to stop him, test him and arrest him. What really ticks me off is that he was allowed to walk out of jail without having to post bond.

It shouldn't matter that he, at least for the present time, holds a top position in local government. He knew better than to drink and drive. He should be held to a higher standard and forced to undergo the same process as any other citizen when charged with a crime.

Lady Justice isn't blind; she's prejudiced and inconsistent, depending on your income. Let me guess, Mr. Surface still thinks he's capable of making solid decisions for us? I think his actions have shown us how our system has a double standard.

If he had any morals, he'd step down.
