The number of state qualifiers doubled for this year's Joplin High School wrestling team.
Sophomores Brandt Loyd (103 pounds) and Jeff Sadler (189) each took fourth at Saturday's Class 3 Sectional 3 Tournament in Jefferson City to advance to the Show-Me Showdown.
Loyd (32-10) opened with a pin of Troy's Rory Kendall, but was pinned in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Loyd took a 7-2 decision over Columbia Hickman's Jordan Lanham. Jefferson City's Andy Corbin beat Loyd 11-2 in the third-place match.
Like Loyd, Sadler (30-14) pinned his first-round opponent, Troy's Doug Dodson, but lost a 13-9 decision to Daniel Moore of Rolla in the semifinals.
Sadler, like last week in the district third-place match, knocked out Lebanon's Josh Henson with a pin. Francis Howell's Ryan Dickerson won a 5-4 decision for third place Saturday.
Juniors Jeremy Wells (119) and Dane Bell (145) won their first-round matches, but lost in the semifinals and the consolation semifinals.
Senior Jimmy Mayberry (125) and freshman Jacob Guernsey (135) both lost in the first round, won in the first wrestlebacks and lost in the consolation semifinals.
Junior Justin Cunningham (215) and sophomore Logan Nelson (112) both lost their two matches.
The state meet begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Hearnes Center on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia.
