SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The Joplin High School tennis team went 2-0 on Tuesday at the Class 2 individual sectional tournament at Gillenwaters Tennis Complex.
In singles play, Joplin’s Garret Lewis defeated Branson’s Gavin Brown 6-1, 6-1.
Joplin’s doubles team of Asa Borup and Kaden Seward beat Kickapoo’s Caden Hillman and Mitchell Cope 6-0, 6-3.
With the victories, the Eagles earn a spot at the state tournament in Springfield on May 24-25.
In the other singles match, Glendale’s Payton LaFevers topped Carthage’s Adam Theis 6-1, 6-0.
Kickapoo’s doubles team of Matthew Zengel and Jackson Arbeitman beat Republic’s Isaac Jordan and William Berry 6-1, 6-3.
Joplin will travel to Lee’s Summit North on Saturday for the team sectional event. The Eagles take on Kickapoo at 9 a.m.
CAVALIERS, BULLDOGS ADVANCE IN CLASS 1
Thomas Jefferson hosted a Class 1 individual sectional, with winners advancing to next weekend’s state tournament in Springfield.
In singles play, Thomas Jefferson’s Ian Ding defeated Bolivar’s Kaden Katzer 6-3, 6-2, while Warrensburg’s Cory Conley beat Thomas Jefferson’s Brock Conklin 6-3, 6-2.
A pair of local doubles teams advanced.
Carl Junction’s Colin King and Philipp Leithauser knocked off Nevada’s Tanner Gotschall and Caleb Theis 6-0, 6-4, while Thomas Jefferson’s Dylan Dean-Heck and Noah Hamlett beat Warrensburg’s Sungwon Cho and Brock Hepler 6-4, 6-4.
Thomas Jefferson competes in the team sectional tournament on Saturday at Houston. The Cavaliers face Warrensburg in the first round at 10 a.m.
SEASON ENDS FOR EAGLES, TIGERS
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Joplin’s girls soccer season came to an end after a 2-0 loss to top-seeded Republic in the first round of the Class 4 District 10 tournament.
The Eagles, who were seeded four, went 10-10 in an injury plagued season.
In other action Tuesday, third-seeded Springfield Central beat second-seeded Carthage 4-1.
The Tigers end the season at 14-7.
