CARTHAGE, Mo. — Propelled by a fast start, the Carthage High School girls basketball team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 43-33 win over McDonald County on Thursday night.

The Tigers took control of the nonconference clash early by racing out to a 14-4 lead by the end of the first period. The hosts were up 25-8 at halftime.

Sophomore forward Hailey Fullerton scored 11 points to lead Carthage, while senior point guard Lexi Black added nine.

Junior guard Rita Santillan scored 11 points to lead the Mustangs (3-7), who erupted for 25 second-half points after being limited to eight in the first half.

Carthage hosts Springfield Central at 6 on Monday.


McAuley Catholic rolled to a 56-34 win over Pierce City.

The Warriors led 33-16 at halftime and then a 20-4 third quarter extended McAuley’s lead to 53-20.

Courtney Bates scored 21 points to lead the Warriors, who evened their record at 4-4. Taylor Schiefelbein added 11 points for McAuley.

Leslie Jones led Pierce City with 21 points.

McAuley is at Southeast in Cherokee, Kansas, at 6 on Tuesday.



NEVADA, Mo. — Webb City won seven matches by pin in a 55-12 win over Nevada.

Winning matches by fall for the Cardinals were Kyler Carter (106 pounds), Donald Simonds (113), Jacob Crandall (120), Snyper Herron (132), Brantley Carter (138), Jackson Taylor (145) and Kade Hicks (170).

Webb City’s Brayden Hollinsworth earned a major decision at 152, while Roger Carranco won by decision at 160.

Nevada’s Caleb Longobardi nipped Webb City’s Matt Miller 1-0 in the heavyweight bout.
